Geographical location

Madeira is an island of volcanic origin in the Atlantic Ocean and forms together with the small neighbouring island Porto Santo and the uninhabited Desertas Islands the Madeira group of islands.

Madeira is home to some 240,000 people who live in the metropolitan area around the capital Funchal and the fishing town of Câmara de Lobos, which became famous mainly for a painting by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Even today, Câmara de Lobos and the luxury hotel Reid’s Palace are of outstanding tourist importance for Britons. The entire main island Madeira has the character of a medium to high mountain range and falls spectacularly into the ocean along the coasts.

The Portuguese island with springlike temperatures all year round is above all a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. The highest elevation of Madeira is Pico Ruivo with a height of up to 1862 meters, which can be found in the rugged high mountains.

Climate in Madeira

License Information available under 'Proof of Image Sources' Madeira’s notorious climate is composed of different mesoclimates. The north of the island has quite a lot of rainfall and therefore a particularly lush vegetation, while the south of Madeira is significantly drier and is characterised by more hours of sunshine.

To enable the southern half of the island to benefit from the rainfall in the north, sophisticated irrigation systems – the open levadas – ensure water supply to the plantations and fields.

Overall, the climate can be described as meditteran-subtropical and is characterised by year-round springlike temperatures, which rarely become particularly cold or particularly hot. Average daytime temperatures range from around 19 °C (January, February) to 26 °C (August, September).

When to travel to Madeira?

Basically Madeira is well travelable all year round, which is the special characteristic of the permanently pleasant temperatures. In the last years between November and February there have been frequent storms and even snowfalls, so we do not recommend winter as the best time to travel on the island.

From mid-October the wetter season in Madeira starts statistically, causing increased precipitation until the end of March. We therefore recommend May to mid-October as the best travel season for Madeira. April is already very sunny as a transitional period and therefore equally popular.

Sights in Madeira

Madeira Island is particularly attractive for its natural attractions and is therefore particularly popular with active holidaymakers. Hikes along the irrigation canals (levadas) offer very intensive nature experiences and fantastic panoramic views in many places.

A particularly impressive climb from Pico Ruivo in the rugged Massif Central up to the second highest peak of Madeira, Pico do Ariero. The way from Blandys Garden to Monte along magnificent tea houses is much more relaxed and suitable for beginners.

From Monte you can either take the traditional basket sledge or the cable car back to the beautiful capital Funchal. You should not miss a stroll through the market halls of the city or a visit to the green oases like Santa Catarina Park or the Presidential Palace Garden.

Bathing is of course possible on Madeira, but one usually looks for white sandy beach on the island in vain. This can only be found in the raised lagoons of Machico and Calheta or on the enchanting neighbouring island of Porto Santo. Otherwise, various natural sea swimming pools attract visitors, for example in Porto Moniz.

This island is just great. We were there in May, hadn’t the dream weather – sometimes cloudy and a little drizzle – but the people and the versatility make up for everything. Anytime again.

Marvin, 23 years old was there in March

It was still a bit fresh, especially at night, but you have to reckon with that even in summer in Madeira. Apart from that, the beginning of March proved to be the best time to travel, we had a lot of sunshine and only one day with dense cloud cover. It was especially nice that we (against all predictions) had no rain at all

Weather Rating: 4 stars – Good
