On this page, you will find information about the climate and the best time to visit Indonesia. We created climate tables and charts for the locations of Jakarta, Medan, Balikpapan, Manado und Manokwari. These contain details about temperatures, precipitation and more.
Furthermore, we analyzed all climate data and provide a recommendation about which months are best to visit Indonesia for your holiday.
The country consists of over 17,000 islands and borders on Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and East Timor. Most of Indonesia belongs to the Asian continent, only the Indonesian region on the island of New Guinea belongs to Oceania.
Indonesia is located in the Indian Ocean, north of Australia. On the island of Java lies the capital Jakarta. More than 9.6 million people live here.
Temperatures range between 29 °C to 32 °C during the year. The southern Indonesian islands are determined by an alternately humid, tropical monsoon climate. This means: in the months October to April there is a rainy season here, in which most precipitation falls and the air humidity rises very strongly.
This is followed by the drying time. Especially in the eastern regions, dry air masses from Australia provide little precipitation and high temperatures. Due to the position of the equator, temperature fluctuations are very low throughout the country. Temperatures of between 27 °C to 32 °C are to be expected in the long term.

When to travel to Indonesia?
Due to different climatic zones, we cannot offer a flat rate for the best travel time in Indonesia. The western areas like Medan should be visited at the beginning of the year in the months January to March. Here you will find quite pleasant temperatures and little precipitation.
The southern areas around Jakarta or also the far north with places like Manado should be visited in the warmer and drier time between April and August. However, it is never completely dry here. One or two showers can occur at any travel time.
If you want to go to New Guinea, you can do this from July to November. Here the precipitation values are around 4.72 in and are thus significantly lower than in the following months. December is not a good month to travel to Indonesia due to heavy flooding in many areas.

Indonesia: Experiences of our Visitors
in the morning usually clear, at 7.00 o’clock already 27 degrees, temperature rising until noon, in the afternoon often somewhat to strongly covered, towards evening often rain, which lasted however rarely longer than 2 hours
Weather Rating: 4 stars – Good
Mainland Lombok: During the day 30-33 degrees, third week of March almost completely covered with little sun, in the evening frequent (sometimes strong) tropical showers. In the fourth week of March three days of sunny and otherwise mixed weather, hardly any rain. Occasional wind, rather strong swell. Water temperature is pleasant (refreshing), even when snorkelling.
The Gili’s have their own microclimate, the clouds get stuck over Lombok, so the weather there is usually better and less rainy.
All in all, the end of the rainy season is recommended. The vegetation is wonderfully green.
Weather Rating: 3 stars – Mixed
Pleasantly warm, but not so hot. At noon there was always some wind, where one did not come at all to sweating without freezing. Perfect Weather
Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent
