In the east of the Balkan Peninsula lies the Republic of Albania. The north of the country borders Montenegro and Kosovo. To the south of Albania is Greece and to the east Macedonia.
Albania has an area of 18000 square miles and about 2.8 million inhabitants. The capital of the Balkan state is Tirana. The Albanian coast is about 45 miles from Italy and only two kilometres from the Greek island of Corfu.
Albania is characterized by mountain landscapes and plateaus. In the north of the republic you find the Albanian Alps. At 2764 metres, the Korab is the highest mountain in the state and the Drin is Albania’s longest river at around 180 miles. The Albanian lek has been the official currency since 1925.

Albania has a Mediterranean climate with very fluctuating temperatures. Temperatures in the winter months from November to March fall to less than 15 °C, at night even to as much as 5 °C. Rainfall is highest in the winter months, falling between 80 and 5.91 in.
In the summer months of June to September and also in the autumn month of October, precipitation levels are significantly lower. The temperatures rise in July up to 32 °C, also the water temperature in July and also in August with 26 °C absolutely suitable for swimming. In the winter months, however, the water temperature drops to fresh 15 °C to 16 °C.

Next to the capital Tirana, the ancient port city Durres is the second largest city of Albania and very popular for a bathing holiday. Albania is characterized by untouched and unique landscapes. Such a varied nature is rarely found in Europe. Flora and fauna are impressive and imposing.
