Geographical location

Nine larger and several smaller islands in the Atlantic form the Portuguese group of the Azores (Ilhas dos Açores). 850 miles west of mainland Europe, the islands cover a total area of 1400 square miles. The islands are about 1500 miles away from North American Newfoundland in Canada.

A total of 247,000 inhabitants live in the Azores; the economic centre is the 60 kilometre long main island of Sao Miguel.

The capital Ponta Delgada with the International Airport of the Azores is also located here. Consequently, all tourists arrive on the main island and can continue their journey from there.

On the island of Pico there is the volcano of the same name, Pico, which with a height of 2351 metres is the highest peak in Portugal.

The Azores lie on the so-called Mid-Atlantic Ridge directly on the border of the North American and Eurasian continental plate.

Climate in the Azores

Sete Citades See auf den Azoren (vickysp / stock.adobe.com) lizenziertes Stockfoto
License Information available under 'Proof of Image Sources' The Azores have an oceanic subtropical climate with very little seasonal variation. This manifests itself in mild winters and not too hot summer months, as would otherwise be expected in subtropical areas. The humidity is relatively high, as the winds are carried over the open Atlantic and transport a corresponding amount of moisture.

The Azores are located much further north than the Canary Islands and therefore also differ climatically. From the end of September, foothills of low pressure areas and foothills of tropical storms will be felt in the Azores. However, the direct contact through tropical storms is absolutely rare and only occurs every 10 to 12 years. Winter in the Azores lasts from December to the beginning of April. The weather is difficult to predict at this time, both sunny, calm days and stormy rainy days are possible.

The inhabitants of the Azores often jokingly say that their days have sometimes four seasons, which mix themselves in the middle also still multicolored. It’s not quite that changeable, but you should be prepared for everything, especially in winter. Similar to Madeira Island, the Azores also enjoy mild daytime temperatures at Christmas time, in December the average is 17 °C during the day.

The humid Atlantic climate provides for a species-rich and distinctive flora. The landscapes of the Azores are lush green and pale almost all year round in colourful splendour. Many travellers spend their holidays actively, embark on hiking tours through nature or explore the islands by bicycle.

We recommend a hiking tour on Sao Miguel to Lagoa do Fogo, a former volcanic crater, where a truly dreamlike atmosphere awaits you. The Azores are also known for their abundance of fish.

Diving tours give an exciting impression of the underwater world, various boat trips also give the possibility to experience the up to 38 different whale and dolphin species counted so far with a little luck at close range.
