Geographical location

The Bahamas consist of 700 islands, of which only 30 are permanently inhabited. About 360,000 inhabitants live on an area of 8700 square miles, about 25 inhabitants per square kilometre.

The island state of the Bahamas is indeed located in the western tropical area of the Atlantic Ocean, but the public perception of it is that it is part of the Caribbean region. The Bahamas are located off the southeast coast of the USA and are a very popular destination not only for Americans.

With 3700 square miles, Andros is the largest of the Bahama Islands in terms of area. The highest elevation of the state is Mount Alvernia with only 63 meters on Cat Island. The waters around the islands are very shallow, hence the name “Bahamas”. It comes from the Spanish name Baja Mar, which literally means “shallow sea”.

Abaco is the second largest island after Andros. Many American cruise ships stop at the port of the capital Nassau. The Bahamas are also easily accessible by plane from the American mainland. Many international airlines fly to Nassau Lynden Pindling Airport.

Climate in the Bahamas

The Bahamas has a subtropical climate. The average temperature is 28 °C in summer. Even in winter temperatures rarely drop below 20 °C. The warm Gulf Stream provides water temperatures of 24 °C to 29 °C. Cyclones regularly hit the Bahamas from July to October and the hurricane season officially begins in June and ends in November.

A so-called hurricane policy is widespread among hotels in the Bahamas: If you cancel during a hurricane, you usually get your money back without any problems. In principle, precipitation can occur all year round in the Bahamas, but the peak rainy season largely coincides with the above-mentioned cyclone danger period from around mid-May to October. The northern islands experience significantly more precipitation than the southern islands, which also usually have 4 °C to 5 °C cooler day temperatures.
