Geographical location

The South American landlocked state of Bolivia borders Peru and Chile to the west and Argentina and Paraguay to the south. East of Bolivia lies Brazil.

In the west of Bolivia are mountain ranges of the Andes, two mountains cross the border of 6400 meters. The Sajama is Bolivia’s highest mountain at 6542 meters, the Illimani follows it just behind at 6439 meters. Bolivia has about 10.6 million people, which is just 10 inhabitants per square kilometre.

The central highlands of Bolivia offer a home to about 60 percent of the population. In the valleys of the Andes, at an altitude between 1200 and 1800 metres, there are some wet forests. The capital of the country is Sucre with about 238,000 inhabitants.

Sucre is centrally located inland at the foot of the Andes. Northeast of the capital is Santa Cruz. Outside this big city, the region is only sparsely populated, here you will find tropically hot lowlands. 3372 of 5100 square miles of Lake Titicaca are in western Bolivia. The other part of the lake is in Peru.

Climate in Bolivia

License Information available under 'Proof of Image Sources' The enormous differences in altitude characterize the different climate of Bolivia. In the area of Lake Titicaca there is a temperate mountain climate. This is reflected in small temperature fluctuations between summer and winter and a rather large difference between day and night temperatures.

The climate in the Altiplano area is cool and moderate. Large differences between day and night temperatures and average seasonal temperature fluctuations can be found here.

In the eastern Andes, a subtropical climate shapes temperatures and precipitation. Average day and night temperatures of over 20 °C can be found here. The eastern and northern lowlands of Bolivia are determined by the savannah climate. Low humidity and temperatures of over 30 °C can be found here.
