The Greek peninsula Chalkidiki is located in Macedonia, southeast of Thessaloniki. The region is known for its so-called “three fingers”: Cassandra, Sithonia and Athos. These peninsulas are located in the southeast of Chalkidiki.
Especially Kassandra and Sithonia are popular holiday destinations, with Kassandra having the best tourist infrastructure and most hotels. Athos, the eastern finger of the peninsula, occupies a special position and, together with”Holy Mount Athos”, is in a sense an autonomous monastic state. A so-called pilgrim visa is required for the visit, women are generally not admitted.
In the center of Chalkidiki there is a mountain range with more than 1100 meters height, the region flattens out towards the sea. The hinterland receives little attention from tourists, but is ideal for hiking.
Chalkidiki can be reached via Thessaloniki airport from various European cities.

On the coast of Chalkidiki there is a typical Mediterranean climate. In the winter months of November to February temperatures can drop down to 10 °C. In the summer months, however, temperatures rise above 30 °C. Also the water temperature is summery warm during this time, with over 26 °C nothing stands in the way of a relaxing beach holiday.
The location of our climate data, Gerakini, lies directly on the coast between the two peninsulas Kassandra and Sithonia. However, it represents all parts of the Chalkidiki region. Summer is very warm with daytime temperatures between 29 °C to 32 °C a day. At night they drop to about 15 °C to 18 °C. The summer months remain very sunny and dry, most of the rain falls between November and April.

When to visit Chalkidiki?
The season in Chalkidiki starts every year with the rising temperatures in mid-May and usually ends at the beginning of October, depending on the hotel. Most hotels close out of season, with the best offers in the fringe months of May and September/October. A holiday in Greece outside this period only makes sense for individual tourists who want to explore the region on their own with a rental car.
The best time to visit Chalkidiki is therefore June to September. Here the Mediterranean climate shows itself in all its splendour, Chalkidiki is now sun-kissed and the good weather conjures up a smile in the face of every holidaymaker. Also in the high season one finds lonely bays on Chalkidiki, above all in the southern areas of the two fingers Kassandra and Sithonia are clearly fewer hotels.

The infrastructure in Chalkidiki is excellently developed, the area is predestined for exploration tours with a rental car. The low prices allow you to rent a car to explore your fingers to your own taste or to visit one of the great lakes in the hinterland. Here are the scenic highlights of Lake Volvi or Lake Koronia in the north of Halkidiki.
Another attraction is the excursion to the small island of Amouliani. Tours to the stalactite caves of Petrálona are also particularly popular. Despite the distance of about 190 miles, we recommend a tour to the world-famous Metéora monasteries near the city of Kalambaka. The impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site is unique in the world and the rocky landscape is ideal for day trips.

Chalkidiki: Experiences of our Visitors
Also in the off-season Chalkidiki is definitely worth a visit. The weather ranged from 25 degrees and bright sun to 14 degrees and rain. With 10 days travel time we had two days of rain, the rest of the time it was like beautiful spring or early summer in Germany. The water is also fantastic at around 22 degrees, on almost empty, beautiful beaches – and that in mid-October.

Mid April still a bit cool, but already very sunny and pleasant. Bathing only for the hard-bitten, perfect for hiking, strolling, enjoying. Hotels very cheap, peninsula still firmly in local hands, great!

I was also here in June and found the weather as a sun worshipper very good. It was really nice and warm (always around 32 degrees) and the sea was really ideal for swimming. Another positive aspect was that there was almost no humidity. What bothered me a little was the sometimes very strong wind. Because of this the sunshades could not be opened and even I searched desperately for shadows. This year I’m going again in June and then again at the end of August / beginning of September, so I’m curious if the weather will be different (humidity etc.).

Every day 11 to 12 hours of sunshine, temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius and the sea was crystal clear, well tempered (with 22 degrees exactly right). We couldn’t have imagined it more beautifully. Our hotel was located on Sithonia, probably the most beautiful finger of Chalkidiki, but it is also worthwhile to drive over to Kassandra by rental car. Anyway, June is top of the climate and not yet so overcrowded.

We had absolute dream weather in the middle of May on Chalkidiki. Of course the sea has not yet been properly cleared up, but with air temperatures of up to 33 degrees the water was a very welcome cooling. During the landing approach to Thessaloniki it was still raining heavily, but the following 10 days were pure sunshine and summer temperatures. Really dreamlike and all this at low pre-season prices!
