El Gouna (el-Guna) is a holiday resort about 16 miles above Hurghada on the Red Sea in Egypt.
It is one of the most important tourism projects in Africa, as El Gouna has been developed by entrepreneur and billionaire Samih Sawiris (Orascom) since 1989 into a state-of-the-art holiday resort.
El Gouna – The lagoon – was built around an existing network of waterways and has the most modern infrastructure in Egypt. Today, El Gouna consists of breathtaking villas, 15 top-class hotels under international management (including Steigenberger and Mövenpick), two modern marinas, a hospital and golf courses.
There is even a campus of the Technical University of Berlin in El Gouna, whose security is ensured not only by the state police but also by a well-equipped private security service on all access roads.
El Gouna is more reminiscent of St. Tropez than Egypt. But it is precisely this modern, western attitude to life that makes the city so extraordinarily attractive, even in difficult times.
The journey takes about 30 to 40 minutes from Hurghada International Airport.
Climate in El Gouna
Like neighbouring Hurghada, El Gouna has a desert climate that can be described as subtropical and is characterised above all by a very dry and hot summer. Especially between June and August the thermometer reaches the 35 °C mark almost daily, in midsummer heat periods are not uncommon.
Nevertheless, the values are usually well tolerable, as there is only a low humidity and a pleasant breeze from the Red Sea. In addition, the night temperatures usually cool down by about 10 °C and are therefore ideal to end the evenings under the open sky.
Even in the so-called winter El Gouna has hardly any rainfalls worth mentioning. It remains pleasantly summery until November, only cooling down noticeably between December and March. Especially at night only about 10 °C are reached, so the values are comparable to spring at the US East Coast.

When is the best time to travel to El Gouna?
El Gouna is basically suitable for a holiday all year round, as it offers a wide range of high-class hotels and a variety of activities. The main tourist season is – as almost everywhere – the months of the summer holidays in July and August.
However, the enormous heat during the day can be felt too high for some holidaymakers. Those who are not dependent on school holidays will, in our opinion, find the best conditions immediately before and after. We therefore recommend April to June as well as September to November as the best travel season in El Gouna.
However, we would like to point out once again that this is an assessment of the objectively absolutely best travel time and of course fantastic holidays on the Red Sea in Egypt are also possible in other months (e.g. in March) or even in the middle of summer.

Since El Gouna is a modern planned city, there are logically no old Egyptian places or sights in the local area. However, El Gouna is rich in activities and excursions. Swimming is possible at the lagoon as well as at the beaches directly at the Red Sea.
For kitesurfers the best spots are available directly at the Mövenpick Hotel and at the main spot Mangroovy Beach just north of the centre. They offer modern kite centres, a long, gently sloping sandy beach and huge standing areas with ideal shallow water conditions.
On windless days the El Gouna Cable Park Sliders lures. Worthwhile excursions for non-kitesurfers are a lagoon boat tour and above all snorkeling and diving excursions, which are often accompanied by dolphins. Horseback riding, Segway tours and quad safaris are also high on the popularity scale.
The nightlife of El Gouna takes place mainly at Abu Tig Marina, whose bars and restaurants turn into very stylish and unobtrusive locations with live music and DJs, sometimes at late hours. In any case, the marina is the perfect place to”stroll” from morning to night.

I was in El Gouna in the middle of June. It was an average of 39 degrees. Due to the steady wind and the low humidity it seemed very pleasant to me. But I avoided having lunch outside, because it was too warm for the ordinary European. ????
