More than 330 islands form the Fiji-Arichpel with a total area of more than 11200 square miles, about 115 islands of the Republic of Fiji are actually inhabited today.
The capital is the city of Suva on the south-eastern coast of the largest island, Viti Levu, which together with Vanua Levu makes up almost 90 percent of Fiji’s total land area. Almost all Fiji Islands are of volcanic origin, only some smaller islets developed over time from the surrounding coral reefs.
The highest elevation in Fiji is Mount Tomanivi at 1,324 metres, which was still known as Mount Victoria during the colonial period. The total population of Fiji is currently around 900,000.
The service sector accounts for the largest share of gross domestic product at over 50 percent. Meanwhile, tourism on the dreamlike Fiji Islands is becoming more and more important and occupies a leading position in the South Seas. By comparison, the number of visitors from abroad is still about twice as high as in French Polynesia and even up to five times as high as in Samoa.
Almost half of all South Sea tourists in Fiji come from New Zealand and Australia, followed by the former colonial power of Great Britain and Japan. But also German travellers appreciate the Fiji Islands because of their unique beauty, the paradisiacal beaches and excellent luxury resorts as a real dream destination.
In principle, however, two seasons can be distinguished in Fiji: The wetter summer from about the beginning of November to the end of April, in which the probability of cyclones (tropical cyclones) is also increased, as well as the cooler winter period from May to the end of October.
But even in winter the trade winds cause heavy clouds and sometimes torrential rainfall, especially on the mountainous south-east coast of the largest island Viti Levu. The situation is different in the rain shadow, especially in the northwest, where it remains extremely dry in winter.

When is the best time to travel to Fiji?
As already mentioned, the hot and humid climate of the Fiji Islands provides quite high precipitation values and quite constant temperatures all year round. Nevertheless, the south winter, especially April to October, is the best time to travel in Fiji.
The South Sea air is now not quite as muggy-hot and oppressive, and in most regions of Fiji there is significantly less precipitation. In addition, the risk of clones (in the southern summer from November to April) is clearly avoided.
