The archipelago consists of 9 islands and is one of the so-called Lesser Antilles. Together with the island states of Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin and Martinique, also located in the Caribbean, the French Antilles are consequently also mentioned. Due to the striking shape of its two main islands Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre, which are only connected by a land area of about 40 metres wide, Guadeloupe is also often referred to as “Butterfly Island”.
Guadeloupe also includes the inhabited islets of La Désirade and Marie-Galante, as well as the uninhabited archipelago of Îles des Saintes and Îles de la Petite Terre. The landscape on the two main islands is quite different, as Basse-Terre is a volcanic island with quite mountainous terrain and lush vegetation, while Grande-Terre is rather flat and comparatively sparse.
The (rather low) risk of hurricanes also falls during the wetter months, which is why this period is generally not the best travel season. However, the islands of the eastern Caribbean, including Guadeloupe, receive occasional rainfall all year round, so that it can rain every month of the year.
These are usually strong, but very short and are a welcome refreshment not only for the plants. Usually the sun fights its way through the clouds and there are best conditions for swimming. Due to the mountains on Basse-Terre it can be considerably cooler here at higher altitudes, and more rainfall usually pours down the slopes than on the beaches of Grande-Terre.

When to go to Guadeloupe?
Due to the climatic conditions, we can recommend the months December to June as the best travel season for Guadeloupe without hesitation. In this way they avoid the danger of tropical storms and can look forward to 7 to 8 hours of sunshine daily and water temperatures of around 26 °C. These are ideal conditions for a beach holiday.
Due to the light trade winds, activities such as hiking or cycling tours on Guadeloupe are also pleasantly possible during this time. The temperature at night is a mild 19 °C, while it heats up considerably in the period from June to November. However, this does not mean that the months July to November are not at all suitable for a trip to Guadeloupe.
On the contrary, even in this time there are always sunny phases and sometimes it doesn’t rain at all for days. In addition, the prices of the hotels are now pleasantly low in the low season, and the flight offers (mostly via France) also offer great savings potential. If you don’t mind the possible weather risks, you can enjoy a fantastic holiday on Guadeloupe even outside the best travel season.
