Geographical location

Five hours by plane from the Californian metropolis of Los Angeles is the Hawaiian chain of islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Aloha State is 2300 miles from the mainland and is known worldwide as a paradise for vacationers and surfers due to its climate and beaches.

The most famous islands are the main island Hawaii (Big Island) and its neighbouring islands O’ahu and Maui. The 50th state of the USA is a fascinating mixture of Polynesian cultural influences, North American modernity and East Asian bustle.

Geographically, the more than 135 islands of Hawaii belong to Oceania and not to the American continent. Not all islands are actually inhabited, among the largest inhabited islands rank beside the already mentioned also lesser known exotics like Ni’ihau, Kaua’i, Moloka’i and L?na’i.

The 137 islands and atolls cover an area of 10300 square miles, on which about 1.4 million people live. The highest point of the islands is the volcano Mauna Kea with about 4205 meters.

Climate in Hawaii

License Information available under 'Proof of Image Sources' The Hawaiian Islands have a fairly constant warm tropical climate. The temperatures range from 26 °C to 31 °C all year round and therefore fluctuate only very slightly. The months of August and September reach the peak value of 31 °C in Honolulu and are very low in precipitation. Even at night the temperatures drop only insignificantly.

The water temperature of the Pacific Ocean reaches 27 °C around Hawaii in the summer months. The high volcanic areas Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa can get 10 °C in winter, in fact the mountain peaks can even be covered with snow in winter. However, many resorts such as Waikiki on O’ahu rarely reach temperatures below 20 °C even at night in winter.

Typical for tropical areas is usually very high humidity at high temperatures. Due to the gentle trade winds these unpleasant aspects are mostly absent in Hawaii and a very pleasant climate prevails. In the winter months of November to March, precipitation increases on all islands, the heaviest rainfall pours out on the slopes of the mountain regions.

When to go to Hawaii?

The climate offers very pleasant travel conditions all year round, which is why Hawaii can be called a year-round destination with only minor restrictions. There is no distinct rainy season, but it can come particularly in the afternoons in each season to short showers. Statistically, the driest months are from May to October.

Accordingly we recommend exactly this period also as best travel time for Hawaii, since the weather conditions are now particularly good and pleasant. July and August are classic high season months during school holidays, especially childless couples should avoid this period if possible. From November onwards, not only is precipitation slowly increasing, but thousands and thousands of”winter refugees” from the USA, Canada and above all Asia are also flocking to the islands.

Especially between Christmas and Easter many hotels are fully booked and the beaches are quite full. If that doesn’t bother you, you will find good conditions for a relaxing holiday even at this time of the year. With island hopping you can connect the most beautiful regions of Hawaii and integrate varied activities as well as numerous excursions into your travel program.

Axel, 43 years old was there in March

21 days on Oahu, Big Island and Maui. It was only one day on Oahu continuously rainy, otherwise mostly blue sky, now and then a few cloud fields. Depending on the location on the respective island, however, the weather can vary greatly. For example, it is rainy in the northeastern part of Big Island and Maui, but beautiful in the south and southwest. This is due to the location of the volcanoes.

Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent
