Geographical location

On the southern coast of the People’s Republic of China is the metropolis of Hong Kong. More than 7 million people live here on an area of 690 square miles. This results in an incredible population density of 6429 inhabitants per square kilometre! In comparison: Germany has a population density of 227 inhabitants per square kilometre.

Hong Kong is divided into four regions, Kowloon, NewTerritorries, Hong Kong Island and the Outer Islands. The Kowloon Peninsula and the north of Hong Kong Island are very densely populated and represent an important residential sector. The cost of living is enormous and is among the highest in the world.

Hong Kong is located on the South China Sea and has the status of a special administrative zone, i.e. Hong Kong retains a free market economy and a high degree of internal autonomy, which is otherwise rather untypical for China. The largest of Hong Kong’s 263 islands is Lantau Island, on whose neighbouring island Chek Lap Kok is Hong Kong International Airport.

Highlights and Attractions

One of the great highlights in Hong Kong is the city’s fascinating skyline, which can be admired in all its glory from the Victoria Peak viewing platform, for example. For first-time travellers to Hong Kong, a Star Ferry trip through Victoria Harbour and Kowloon Bay is recommended right at the start of their stay. The popular tour provides a good overview and gives a first impression of the metropolis.

Not only families with children love the Hong Kong Disneyland and the aquarium in Ocean Park Hong Kong. In the evening it is worth visiting the Temple Street Night Market, which offers not only souvenirs but also delicious delicacies. The Ladies’ Market also bears his name for a reason and has stands with handbags, accessories and clothing for over a kilometre.

If you seek refuge in a more relaxing environment after hours of over-stimulation, the Nan-Lian Garden in the San Po Kong district is recommended. It is a contrast to the hustle and bustle of the hectic city. Those who want to experience the “Chinese Las Vegas”, however, can reach the casino city of Macau from Hong Kong within 60 minutes by fast ferry. Besides gambling, Macau also has an interesting old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
