The fertile river plains of the Brahmaputra and Ganges rivers lie south of the Himalayas and represent important agricultural areas. More than 1.2 billion people live on an area of about 3.3 million square kilometers.
This results in a population density of 368 inhabitants per square kilometre. This makes India the second most populous country in the world and the seventh largest in terms of area.
The capital New Delhi is part of the metropolis Delhi and lies in the north of India. 150 miles off the south coast of India lies the island state of Sri Lanka with almost 22 million inhabitants.
In summer the monsoon strongly influences the weather. In most parts of the country there is enormous rainfall between June and September. In Mumbai, these are particularly pronounced and can be up to 28.74 in in July. During this time, the humidity also rises and brings sultry, unpleasant air with it.
After the rainy season, the dry season, in which there is no precipitation at all in western Mumbai, follows in New Delhi with isolated showers. India is heating up a lot during this phase. Temperatures rise to 40 °C in April and May. Northeasterly winds bring little moisture during this period.

When to visit India?
According to our experience, the best travel time for India is between October and the end of March. At this time the temperatures are bearable and at night it cools down pleasantly in many regions. Especially northern India and the west coast can be visited very well already in October and November.
In the south, the best time to travel starts around the beginning of December. Especially at the turn of the year, India’s climate shows its pleasant side. Up to 10 hours of daily sunshine and temperatures of 21 °C to 30 °C provide a great basis for a successful trip.
The infinite number of sights are best discovered in India by round trip. The rainy season does not offer good conditions for this. Many traffic routes are flooded during this time and are partially unusable. Those planning to visit the Himalaya Mountains should do so in the months between May and September.
Outside this time it is very cold and heavy snowfall restricts the travel possibilities. A combination of bathing vacation, cultural program and active vacation in the Himalaya would be possible in the fringe months April/May as well as September/October. Nevertheless, the best travel time in the Himalayas is quite rainy in all other parts of the country.
