The cloudy Aguas Calientes is the tourist centre on the world-famous wonder of nature, the formerly small village has continued to grow in recent years and now accommodates a large number of accommodation, restaurants and tour operators.
There are no classical seasons like in Europe in the region around Machu Picchu. However, the distinct rainy season in Peruvian summer (our winter months) is to be clearly distinguished from the dry season in the Andes. The rainy season at Machu Picchu usually begins in December and causes heavy rainfall until the end of March.
April is regarded as a changeable month of transition, which, however, becomes increasingly stable over the course of the month. The dry season then runs from the beginning of May to around mid-November, before it becomes significantly wetter again towards the end of November and the upcoming rainy season begins in the Andes.
In general, rainfall can also occur in the dry season at Machu Picchu. Especially between May and August showers are the absolute exception. The rainy months are January and February, the quite strong showers can lead to impairments and closures. In February the Inatrail is even completely closed.

When is the best time for Machu Picchu in Peru?
The mysterious Inca city Machu Picchu in the Peruvian Andes is an unforgettable experience at any travel time. Nevertheless, the effects of the rainy season, especially between mid-December and mid-March, should not be underestimated. We therefore recommend the period from mid-April to mid-November as the best travel season.
The months of May to September are particularly pleasant, with only a very low probability of rain and particularly many hours of sunshine. The clear air now provides fantastic photographic conditions, but the low night temperatures make thick clothing necessary, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.

Machu Picchu is one of the most important sights in South America and is on top of the bucket list of many travellers. It is usually most crowded between 11 am and 3 pm when both the overnight guests from Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes) and the day visitors have arrived by train.
Every day around 2,000 guests visit the ruined city, which was built from a total of 216 stone buildings in a system of stairs. UNESCO demands a drastic reduction to a maximum of 800 visitors per day due to the impact on the preservation of the world cultural heritage. In general, tickets can also be purchased in Cusco about 2 days in advance.
If you would like to book a climb to the neighbouring local mountain Montaña or Huayna Picchu in addition to visiting Machu Picchu, you should book your tickets at least six weeks in advance. This can be done online via the government’s official website or for a small surcharge via a travel agency.
