Geographical location

The small town of Marsa Alam, situated on the Red Sea in Egypt, is a resort known for its sandy beaches and coral reefs and has about 2000 permanent residents.

The city is located about 170 miles south of Hurghada, 140 miles east of Edfu. Marsa Alam has had its own international airport since 2001.

For many decades the main business of the inhabitants was fishing and agriculture. A smaller part works in the marble mines. In the meantime, tourism is becoming more and more important. Numerous upscale hotel resorts have opened right on the coast of Marsa Alam and are a popular destination for bathers and divers.

In the u-shaped Abu Dabab Bay, sea turtles and even rare manatees (dugongs) are regularly spotted. Kitesurfers love the protected lagoon El Naaba. Not far from the city is the large Wade El Gemal National Park.

Despite its small, manageable size, the city of Marsa Alam with its surrounding countryside and the nearby Red Sea offers several national parks and attractions worth seeing. Diving and snorkeling on the coast is comparable to snorkeling and diving in Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh, as it was in the 80s of the 20th century. There you will enter a wonderful underwater world where you can see dolphins, manatees and almost untouched coral reefs.

31 miles south of Marsa Alam is Wadi-Al-Gamal, a national park whose area reaches to the beaches of the Red Sea and consists to a large extent of desert, coral reefs and a mountain range. One of the most famous beaches of Marsa Alam is Marsa Murena. A place where you can snorkel for sea turtles, dugongs, which are the sea cows and dolphins listed above. The Pharaonic Gold Mine and the Emerald Gold Mine are mines worth seeing for those interested. Furthermore, there is a temple Sethos I. near Wadi Miya, which should be worth a visit for culture enthusiasts.
