General & Geography

Martinique is a state between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The island is one of the so-called islands above the wind and belongs to the region of the Lesser Antilles.

The closest neighbouring islands are Dominica and Saint Lucia. As Martinique, with its capital Fort-de-France, is an overseas department of France, like Guadeloupe, the island state is also part of the European Union.

The euro is therefore also the official currency in Martinique, home to some 400,000 inhabitants. The island has a length of about 45 miles and measures about 24 miles at its widest point.

Martinique is very mountainous and is characterized in the north by the 1397 meter high volcano Montagne Pelée. Bananas are still the most important export commodity, about 12 percent of the island’s area is used for agriculture.

Martinique International Airport is often served by French airlines via Paris-Orly or neighbouring islands such as Guadeloupe.

Climate in Martinique

License Information available under 'Proof of Image Sources' The Martinique climate is typical of the region and can undoubtedly be described as tropical. This means year-round warm temperatures with only minor fluctuations and comparatively high humidity. Classic seasons, however, are not to be found in Martinique.

Even on hot days, the regular Alizés breeze from the northeast provides a slight cooling, so that the temperatures are never perceived as unpleasant. The touristically popular south of Martinique is significantly drier than the lush green north of the island.

Short tropical showers can occur all year round, but the rainy season in Martinique from June to around the end of November is characterised by increased rainfall. There is also a low risk of tropical cyclones during this period (hurricane season).

When is the best time to visit Martinique?

In general, the beautiful island of Martinique is worth a trip all year round, but the aforementioned rainy season can sometimes cause some restrictions, especially during a seaside holiday. Also for active holiday-makers it can come during the rainy season on Martinique to slippery or even impassable paths and hiking trails.

We therefore recommend the period from the end of November to the end of April as the best travel season on Martinique. Also the transition month of May is still a very good time to travel despite rising humidity and sometimes very humid evenings, and interesting low-season prices now lure.
