The largest Spanish-speaking country in the world borders the USA in the north and Guatemala and Belize in the south. With an area of almost two million square kilometres, Mexico is almost six times as large as the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Important regions of the country include the Yucatán peninsula with Playa del Carmen and the neighbouring tourist stronghold Cancun, the famous coastal town Acapulco on the Pacific, the Mayan stronghold San Cristóbal de las Casas and the border town Tijuana. Besides the capital Mexico City, the major cities of Monterrey, Puebla and Guadalajara are of enormous economic importance.
Mexico is a very diverse country with exciting geology. The largest part is dominated by the striking highland block, whose edge mountains tower up like rock walls in front of the lowlands of the coastal areas.
Mexico’s biodiversity is particularly outstanding: With 763 reptile species, the country ranks first worldwide and second among the world’s richest countries in 448 mammal species. The highest elevations are the Citlaltépetl, Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl mountains (all over 5000 metres).
Southeast Mexico is considered moist in summer and has tropical characteristics, while the west on the border with California has more of a winter rain climate. In the most important tourist regions, especially Yucatan and the area around Cancun, there are only minor temperature fluctuations.
The high humidity and the usually enormous temperatures in May herald an extended rainy season in the southeast, the central highlands and some Pacific coastal regions. From June to September, rainfall is the highest in the country.
In the course of September, the hurricane season on the coasts of Mexico reaches its peak. October stands for a change in most parts of the country, while in Yucatán there are still heavy showers to be expected. From November, the dry season ensures stability.
