Montenegro borders the neighbouring countries Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Kosovo and Serbia. Capital and largest city of the country is Podgorica (formerly Titograd).
Touristically, the small state of Montenegro with only about 650,000 inhabitants is becoming increasingly popular. And rightly so, because Montenegro, once closely linked to Serbia, combines an unbelievable range of attractions in a very confined space.
The “Land of the Black Mountains” inspires not only with rugged plateaus, canyons and lake landscapes, but also picturesque old towns as well as fantastic gravel and sandy beaches.
The country’s largest tourist centre is the Budva Bay, the so-called Budva Riviera region. Other highlights on the coast include the Bay of Kotor, the long sandy beach of Ulcinj and the trend destination Sveti Stefan.
But the interior is also full of surprises. The Tara Canyon at Durmitor National Park, Nevidio Canyon, Prokletije Massif, Lake Scutari and Ostrog Monastery are worth a visit.
The marina Marina Montenegro in Tivat with its numerous luxury hotels and the construction project on the former prison island Luštica Bay are currently exciting new projects.
In general, the climate on the Adriatic coast can be described as typically Mediterranean. The summer months are dry, sunny and warm to hot. From late autumn to spring, precipitation increases significantly, but temperatures on the coast remain moderate even in winter. The warmest months are July and August.
The water temperatures on the Adriatic mostly break the 20 °C mark at the beginning of May and are perceived as pleasantly warm by the end of May at the latest. The sea then usually offers perfect water temperatures for a bathing holiday (23 °C to 27 °C) until the end of October.
While it is still very warm on the coast in September, the fall winds called “Bora” ensure constant cooling, especially from October onwards. East of the coast, including the plain around the capital Podgorica, a continental climate prevails. At high altitudes, snowfall occurs mainly between December and March.

We were with sonnenklar.TV (tour operator BIGXTRA of FTI) for one week with All Inclusive in the Montenegro Beach Resort near Budva, in the district Be?ici. A really great holiday in an exciting country! Impressive scenery and coastline, great old towns and medieval fortresses in the area… We really liked it. Crystal clear water, sunny weather and at least 26 degrees in the sun every day. A great travel time for Montenegro!
