Geographical location

Samaná is a peninsula in the north-eastern part of the Dominican Republic, capital of the province is the village of Samaná with about 45,000 inhabitants.

The northern coast of the peninsula has a variety of great beaches, nestled between lush coconut forests and tropical vegetation that grow right up to the sea.

Las Terrenas is the region’s main tourist centre, with a number of top-class holiday resorts, but overall the Samaná peninsula is far less crowded than the Dominican strongholds in other parts of the country (especially Punta Cana and Puerto Plata).

The journey is either via Samaná International Airport, which is about an hour’s drive from Las Terrenas, or via Las Americas Airport in the capital Santo Domingo. From here you can reach the peninsula in about 2.5 hours by car.

Climate in Samaná

Cayo Levantado (Rachel Docherty) [flickr.com] CC BY
License Information available under 'Proof of Image Sources' The climate on the peninsula is tropical and very humid compared to other holiday regions of the Dominican Republic. Short, violent tropical showers can occur all year round, creating the lush, picturesque landscape of Samaná.

From about mid-December to May, there is the least rainfall in the region, but from the beginning of June to about October there is not only an increased level of precipitation, but also the potential danger of hurricanes.

Nevertheless, the period of the European summer holidays in July and August is the main tourist season in Samaná, as is the period around Easter (especially Semana Santa). Due to the good climatic conditions, the period from Christmas to the end of February is also extremely popular.

When is the best time to travel for Samaná?

In travel guides and on information pages on the Internet you will find numerous, completely different hints about the best travel time on the Samaná peninsula. Of course, this is often due to the personal interests of the authors and site operators who want to boost tourism all year round.

But sometimes it is also due to ignorance and the dynamic changes caused by global climate change. In principle, we can indeed call Samaná a year-round destination with a clear conscience, as the temperatures from January to December are almost consistently tropical warm and the sea is also suitable for swimming on most days of the year.

The greatest danger of storms and hurricanes is between June and early October, with experience showing that most storms can hit the peninsula in August and September. Since it comes only in absolute exceptional cases to acute endangerment, this travel time is nevertheless very popular.

If you want to take the least weather risk, you should consider the best time to travel to Samaná from January to April. This recommendation coincides very well with the whale season off the coast: every year from January to the end of March hundreds of impressive humpback whales gather in the bay off Samaná – an incredible spectacle!

In addition to the breathtaking tours for whale watching in spring, the region also offers numerous other sights. The Salto del Límon waterfall is certainly one of the highlights of the island of Hispaniola, as is a boat and hiking trip to the Los Haitises National Park.

Beach lovers should not miss a visit to the Bacardi island of Cayo Levantado, which also has the recommended 5-star Hotel Luxury Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado. If you like it a bit faster, take a trip with the Quad (ATV) to the great Playa Rincon.

We were there in august 2017 18 days, it was beautiful. 2 days of rain but otherwise sunny and in the evening still quite warm.

We were there in March. The weather was very changeable, it rained several times and in the evening it was quite cool. In the evening long clothes were advantageous. At this time of year the weather used to be more beautiful and almost without rain.

Weather Rating: 3 stars – Mixed

We were there at the end of April/May 2017, weren’t so lucky with the weather. The first 4 days it only rained, furthermore it was always cloudy, mixed. Days with blue cloudless skies were pretty rare.

Weather Rating: 3 stars – Mixed

Alexander, 30 years old was there in June

We were in and around Samaná in the middle of June. The climate was quite oppressive and humid (especially in the evening), hot during the day and mostly sunny. One day we had heavy clouds, otherwise the weather was quite good for this travel season.

Weather Rating: 4 stars – Good

Great weather, dream beaches without crowds and many great excursions. Also the whale watching was really impressive, one comes quite close to the animals with the boat under expert guidance and can observe the giants of the seas wonderfully. But don’t worry when swimming, the humpback whales keep a good distance to the coast. So it can’t happen that such a gentle giant suddenly appears next to you while bathing 😀

Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent
