Geographical location

Tunisia is the northernmost state in Africa and is only about 93 miles from the Italian island of Sicily. The country borders Algeria in the west and Libya in the southeast.

Tunisia’s coast stretches along the Mediterranean Sea, over the Gulf of Tunis, the Gulf of Hammamet to the popular island of Djerba on the Gulf of Gabès. In the north of the country is the capital Tunis. The landscape of Tunisia is divided into the fertile coastal strip of Sahel, limestone plateaus and steppes, as well as the highlands of the so-called Dorsale, in which the highest elevations of the country are located with Djebel Chambi (1544 metres) in the southwest and Djebel Zaghouan (1295 metres) in the north-east.

The coastal town of Nabeul and the Hammemet region are located in the north-east of the country. Further east we find the city of Monastir and with Sousse another popular destination. Tunisia covers an area of 102000 square miles and is home to some 11 million people. The official language is Arabic, but French is also widely spoken.

When to visit Tunisia?

Most travellers go to Tunisia for a bathing holiday, which is why the dry and warm summer months are particularly pleasant. The best time to travel in Tunisia is between June and mid-October, especially July and August with 11 to 12 hours of sunshine per day and a pleasant water temperature of 25 °C to 26 °C.

Not only on the popular holiday island Djerba is high season at this time of course, caused by the sunny weather and the long summer holidays in most European countries. A good travel season for holidaymakers without school-age children is therefore also in the transition months such as June and September, as the hotels now lure with good offers.
